FOR WHAT YOURE WORTH
For What You're Worth formed in East Kilbride in 2012, as a 4 piece alternative rock quartet. We caught up with Eric James Liddle, vocalist and guitarist to find out a bit more about where the band are now and where they are planning on going...
Okay Eric, give us a quick update on the band...
Okay haha basically we recorded our first single (and when I say first I mean in a proper studio rather than home recording) after we won studio time thanks to a battle of the bands competition. We have been together over 2 years now and it was a relief to finally spend some time in a genuine studio and record something that sounded professional, so basically this year we are hoping to continue gigging as much as possible, and in all honesty we are looking forward to turning 18 as it opens up a lot of new venues that we will be able to play and therefore gain new fans because of that
Do you find you get a good audience at the gigs you're doing currently? Would you expect the new venues to have a bigger audience?
No its not that, by new audience I mean an older audience as +18s will go to bars etc where as the moment our audience mostly consists of friends/family
So what venues have you played recently? Any memorable moments? I noticed you were on the bill with We Were Kings recently
Yeah We Were Kings wasn't too memorable as we ended up headlining over them which was a little surreal haha; our favourite venue is the classic grand, we have played that over 10 times and we just love the vibe and feel of the place; however other memorable moments would be the first time we played 02ABC as that was our biggest ever audience and for once we felt like a kind of serious band rather than just doing it as an enjoyable hobby - we really don't take ourselves too seriously though haha
Good venues - do you tend to get invites to play, or do you book the gigs yourselves, or is it through promoters?
We usually book them through various promoters, that's' how we've always done it, however we got asked to play the 02ABC by a promoter rather than us asking them which was very exciting, and before Christmas we where asked to play a set in the Avant Guarde bar which was really cool as we felt our music was taking people's fancy
Have you had any bad experience with promoters or has it been pretty good? What kind of aftercare/promotion do you get from the people you've booked through?
I can't say we have really, but I guess that's down to us not being very 'rock n roll' and making sure that we arrive on time with the kit we were meant to bring and the right amount of ticket sales; the only time we have ever really had problems with promoters is when they actually show up late without a kit but usually it all gets resolved. Glasgow has such a reliable scene so we are very fortunate for that, it makes it much easier to gig and promote your music
Do you guys have a brand in mind for the band? Is there a particular image you'd like portrayed of the band? Would this image be tied to the music or a conceptual thing that you feel strongly about?
Yes, we do find that branding is an essential factor in the success of a band. For us, we chose a logo very early on and we stuck with it, and this has always appeared on our Ep's and singles and gave us a strong identity. We have always loved that when bands have an occurring theme within their promotion and artwork, sometimes the likes of Kiss/BVB can really overdo it and get carried away with it, however the likes of say Biffy who this time round used the onstage tree to tour opposites are just inspirational. Our familiar FWYW stencil has now been incorporated into a music video for our new single 'Dilemma' which was really fun because its showing our trademark if you like through a new medium, and it gives us a local band that sense of achievement and ambition
Yeah I mean it really can make all the difference, people tend to take you more seriously if you look the part - saying that, we really don't have any kind of matching clothes or distinct look onstage, we really just wear whatever haha
We have always had a reputation for a crazy stage presence; getting the crowd involved and interested is the be all and end all to us at the end of the day, we just like to make sure everyone has a good time, whether we are playing to 10 people or 200 people
