AQUA FAUX

AQUA FAUX are an Electro Synthpop band based in Edinburgh, Scotland. Originally formed in early 2014 as an acoustic act, they have progressed into creating 80's inspired Electronic music. The trio of Lois, Sam and Greg also recently produced and recorded a four track EP called Spellbound.

The EP is really refreshing chunk of electronic pop, and we've actually had it on repeat since we first heard it. Highly recommended listening - it's just a damn shame the Evo4 team are taking a bit of a holiday from putting on live gigs at the moment, or we'd have jumped at organising a gig simply based around this EP alone!

So if we can't do a gig, we thought we'd do the next best thing and catch up with the band to find out more about them and their music.

You guys got together this year as an acoustic band - how did the transition to digital come about? Also, I notice from a couple of the tracks they're very 'guitar' focussed - is this something that's a throwback to the acoustic beginnings?

So basically we began as an acoustic band because I was writing song melodies for folk/rock inspired songs, and the digital aspect to the music was added because the boys in the band wanted to do something different so began adding synths to the mix. We all have various tastes in music (Vitalic, Tiga, Com Truise, The Postal Service, Future Islands and Bright Eyes to name a few) so this may be the reason why our music has a digital aspect mixed with a indie/rock sound. The boys in the band are also influenced by electronic music and really wanted to create music with synths, they have also previously been in many alternative/rock bands so wanted to do something different.

When we began mixing the synths, electronic drums, bass and guitar together we also felt it created a new sound, than just the acoustic songs we were writing. In the EP recordings we haven't used samples it's real bass and guitar (Sam plays guitar and Greg plays bass). When we play live we are currently using mainly synths because our newer songs heavily rely on just synthesisers. So yeah, the guitar sound in our EP does relate to when we first started developing the bands sound with acoustic guitars. This may be the reason why some of the music has a heavy guitar sound. I also always use an acoustic guitar to help me write melodies for the songs, so this approach may also impact what influences our music. I think the guitar sound may still be an element that we will definitely use in the future. We are a very new band so we are not scared of experimenting with different instruments and including them into the digital aspect of our music.

So what are the plans for the band? Do you see it becoming more of a recording project or more geared towards gigging, or something in the middle? Do you plan to involve any management or are you happy to take control of the band direction yourselves?

We definitely want to play more gigs around Scotland, so far we have played a few in Edinburgh and have really enjoyed the experience. We have just released our first EP Spellbound which we recorded and produced by ourselves, it was actually recorded in my living room and Sam did all the mixing and mastering. We have also developed a few new songs, so we will for sure be recording more music in the next year, possibly for a second EP or it may lead to an album. At the moment we are really enjoying what we are doing and the way we are developing music wise as a band. As a new band on the Scottish music scene we would be interested in involving management. At the moment we work together organising everything, but we would be happy with someone who really liked our music and was super organised to manage us.
