THE RECOVERY
Sometimes you need a palate cleanser from whatever style of music you've been listening to for the last wee while. Here at Evo, we have chop and change our musical obsessions almost daily. Today, we've been hooked on deranged party hardcore. It's not a hangover, it's The Recovery. Here's what they had to say about their year in music...
We started the year off on a high. Right before Christmas the 1st single from our EP 'Wherever Nowhere Takes Us' had been getting a lot of airplay and the video was featured on Kerrang! TV, Scuzz and MTV Rocks. The EP came out in February and we played shows up and down the country in support of it. The reviews were all awesome and featured in Rock Sound, Big Cheese & Kerrang! to name a few.
Sounds like a good start! I'm guessing the rest of the year was pretty quiet? ;)
During the summer we played a handful of shows including our first festival appearances. We started the summer with the Stag & Dagger event in Glasgow which was cool. We then headed North for this year's GoNorth festival where we played at the Ironworks. After that we had T in the Park where we played on the Saturday on the BBC Introducing stage just before headliners Discopolis. That was an absolute blast even if we were competing with the main stage right next to our tent. Snoop Dogg was clashing with our set time so it was a little quiet but amazing all the same. After T in the Park we played a home town show at Glasgow's King Tuts. We were headlining the first night of this year's King Tuts Summer Nights Festival. We love Tuts as a venue and have been going to gigs there since we were wee guys. We've played there a good few times in this band as well as previous bands and it never gets old. We then headed South for an appearance at the Wickerman Festival. This was our first time at the festival in general and it was a really cool atmosphere. Really chilled out and quite family orientated. We played to a variety of people which was fun and we really hope we get to play there again. The last show of the summer was at Wake the Deen Fest in Aberdeen where we headlined their Monster Energy stage. We always love playing Aberdeen, it's always insane. It's kind of like a second home to us, mainly because of the guys at Daily Dischord and BRACE.
Now that's a good summer! Surely there wasn't time for anything else?
During the summer we also released the second single from our EP. The track is called 'Taking Care of Business.' We filmed a really low budget and basic video for it and it done the rounds on tv and the radio. After the release of the single we were featured in Kerrang!'s Introducing and shot some photos for it with local photographer Euan Robertson. This was really cool as tons of our favourite bands over the years have also featured in it.
I notice you've not been playing live recently, how come?
We played our last show of the year on Halloween at King Tut's. We have been busy writing new sounds which will eventually make up our first album. We are already coming up with new approaches to writing and feeling very comfortable with how it's sounding. We're taking a little break from playing live over the festive season and concentrating solely on writing. We'll probably get back out their come January/February and hoping to play more Scottish cities and towns than we have before. We just want to play as many places as we can and bring our music to as many listeners as possible. We already have a couple of festivals booked for the summer and although it feels like forever away, we cannot wait to get back to what we love doing best, causing chaos.
How do you manage to find the time for it all?
We all currently work boring full time jobs and juggle everything around for the band. Whether it be time off to go away and play, money to record/van hire/petrol. Like all other bands we do struggle but it's all worth it. We've all been doing it for years and in this band it's no different.
When we play live we always like to give it our all, and more. We've always been fans of bands that have a very physical presence live as well as trying to perform their tunes as tight as possible. We feel we are pretty tight when it comes to performing so we like to put on a good visual for people as well. If only 1 person in the room leaves having liked what they've heard then that's what makes it worthwhile. But even if people don't like what they hear, we still like them to walk away and feel they've witnessed something different, something exciting and on the edge.
And so the inevitable question - what's the plans for 2014?
Play as many places as possible (Scotland being a big priority). Finish writing the album and hopefully get the means to record it. First trip to Europe hopefully. Get more people into our stuff, get more people to gigs and generally spread the word as far is it'll go.
