GULLION

As part of a deal with a secret intelligence agency to look for his missing brother, an ace pilot goes on missions with an advanced battle helicopter. As part of a deal with the KSF to look for their missing fame, a renegade group go on missions with an advance armoury of deadly sounds.

Gullion are something different. Very different. But also, there's also something familiar about them. We're not talking about the fact we've known these guys for some time, rather the music. It's... retro? Perhaps not the right word. Oldskool?

Fuck it, these guys are RetroSkool.

There, that sums up Gullion's genre.

Or does it...

Hailing from Campbeltown, Argyll via France, Robert Black, Andrew Black and Christophe Adie make up the collective that is Gullion. With nothing more than vocals, drum machines, drums, keyboards, guitars, Atari ST's, iPhones and some imagination these guys have managed to whack out a 13 track album in a mere matter of months.

And what an album it is. There's something in it for everyone. Whether that be blues, jazz, opera, rap, pop, techno... It really is one of the most eclectic collections of songs from a group we've heard in some time.

We kick off this music journey with Temptation. And it's tempting us in with the first blast of 16bit tracker sounds and rap vocals. It's as if the 80's dance music samples have been given a new lease of life with Christophe's rapping. This is why we at Evo keep an Amiga and OctaMed handy. (For those that have heard this already, and are slightly confused as to what the lyrics about 'KSF' signify, this is a reference to the first ever live performance of this song performed at the Kintyre Songwriters Festival.)

But if that was an intro, it's nothing compared to the second track to blast out of the speakers. Like a bastard Airwolf theme tune keyboard intro we're introduced to the darker side of Gullion - this is where the guys show that the 80's synth isn't dead, it's just lying - waiting for the opportunity to grab you by the throat and shout BRING IT ON!!.

Of course, you might be thinking that this is going to be an all-out tribute to 80's multitracker sounds, but you'd be more than mistaken. Tracks such as Born To show that there's harmony vocals, acoustic guitars and accordians to be had as well. And that's not even covering Sexual Dynamite where we get all grungy and dirty with garage band guitars, reverbtastic vocals and live drums.

What the hell have we got ourselves into?

Rather than bore you with a track by track summary (besides, we'd hate to spoil the surprise the uninitiated ears will have) we're just going to say that we urge you to trip on over to Gullion's BandCamp page and have a listen for yourself. And purchase a copy as well.

For anyone that's not tempted with a digital album, if you ask the guys nicely they might send you a vinyl copy of it - there's also rumours that there may even be a cassette copy...

We love the RetroSkool. We love Gullion.

Deadly.
